I Don’t Like To Have My Picture Taken!

I like the idea of being an author but I don’t like to have my picture taken and I don’t think I have ever had one that I really liked. It may come from my mother always cautioning me, “pretty is as pretty does” and maybe in my mind I don’t ever measure up.  The simple fact is, authors need pictures and unless you have a really good camera, snapshots just don’t make the grade.  I can’t tell you how many times the pictures I submit to my editor for the column in the Times Record  are rejected. If you are out there writing the great american novel then you need to take a break and find someone who can do a quality photograph. If it isn’t in your budget to get professional photos then find a way to pay for at least one, you are going to need it for your book cover. Good Luck and I hope to see your picture out there soon.

How to make an author happy.

How do I make an author happy? Leave a review.

You buy a book, read it, love it, then give it away or toss it on a shelf. What else is there to do? If the book was written by Steven King or Nora Roberts it won’t make a lot of difference but if it was written by Linda Laughlin that is a different story. Authors who have written one or two books would love for you to do a review of their book. Get on Amazon or Goodreads and you can have a part in the making of an author. New authors would pay to have someone give them a review but that is against the rules and most sites have ways to catch the person who gives fraudulent reviews. Aunt Martha can leave ten different messages but they all come from the same site and somehow the computer tells the story. With some booksellers they hope to sell you the book, then get you to review it, thus ensuring one book, one review. For those of you that think your vote doesn’t count, at least in the book world you are wrong. Make an author happy, do a book review.

“Fight For Your Life!” by Linda Laughlin is almost here!

A lot of you have been asking about book two. My editor and I have gone through the manuscript one last time, trying to make it the best it can be, and it’s now being set up in both ebook and paperback formats.  You should see “Fight For Your Life” in print sometime within the next month. I was proud of the first book, but as an author I think I have grown and book two shows just how much.

In this follow up to Run For Your Life! I take you back to visit the Burke family, but the real star is the old Burke Mine. Grandpa Burke left what he thought was a played out old mining claim to his  family, never dreaming that they would find something far more important down in it’s tunnels. Steve and Darrin fight  for a future and what they hold most dear, family; will they find another fortune while fighting for their life?  Come join them and  see Jeffery Randall, a truly evil man, finally get his due.

Be sure to look  for “Fight For Your Life!” by Linda Laughlin, available soon!!

Book Signing at Chapters on Main, Van Buren Arkansas

Are you a Book Junkie?

As an author, it is not a surprise that I am a book junkie. I always have room for a new book, and most of the time a new bookcase. “Books equal Love!” I believe in the power of reading. Books can take you on a trip around the world or teach you how to do anything. If you can read, you can find the answers you seek. Thus, the ravings of a book junkie!!!

A Place to Find your Fix

Chapters On MainThis week I visited a charming book store across the street from the train station in historical Van Buren, Arkansas. When you enter “Chapters on Main” you will see new books and used books, all displayed for your enjoyment. As you walk through the store, you will find a comfortable chair or two tucked in among the bookcases. In the back of the store is a coffee and tea bar with several small tables. This reminded me of an old fashion soda fountain, except it is for coffee drinkers.

Book Review of “Ignited” by Kaylea Cross

A Canadian Author you will Love!

Kaylea Cross is an author I have personally just discovered and highly recommend her book. I get the feeling she has done a lot of research on the U.S. special forces. While I am not an expert, I have read a lot on the subject and Miss Ross tells a very believable story. This book is fast paced, just the way I like them, and I didn’t want to put it down until I finished the last page. A lot of alpha male heroes!

Pulls you into the plot, an exciting read!

Kaylea Cross - Ignited Khalia Patterson’s father is killed by the Taliban while trying to build a school for girls in the mountain region of Pakistan. As a teacher, Khalia knows the importance of an education, and as her father’s daughter, she takes it upon herself to finish the school that the Fair Start Foundation had begun. Hunter, an ex-Navy SEAL, is working for a private security firm and hired to get Kaylea in country for the opening of the school  and home in one piece.  Khalia meets one harrowing situation after an other with strength and courage, first gaining Hunter’s respect and then his love. In “Ignited” you go from one dangerous situation to another in a country filled with fighting and corruption. Will they escape with their lives and can two such polar opposites make a future together?

I loved this book. It has a lot of action and you won’t want to put it down,

Review of “An Unlikely Match” by Barbara Dunlop

Fun on BookBub

I have found a new site. When I am not writing, I have been reading books from BookBub. This site has introduced me to authors I have never read before and I am having a lot of fun. If you are a book junkie like me, they will help satisfy your addiction for books. Calling all readers to come join me!

One author I am reading

Barbara Dunlop,  a Canadian author, starts the book with four matchmaking retirees. They have condos in Sunny Autumn Seniors Community in Florida. This foursome decides to find a woman for JW’s grandson, and you won’t believe the results.

An adventure in matchmaking

Barbara Dunlop - An Unlikely MatchIn An Unlikely Match, we are introduced to four retirees. JW Sterling never knew he had a child, much less a grandchild. He retired from the service and as a former Green Beret, he was totally unprepared for a grown grandson. It started with Dolly saying that Morgan was gay. That was ridiculous, Sterling men were not gay. Hannah insisted that just because he is a little awkward, it didn’t mean he is gay. Sam, a retired scientist and computer genius, agrees with JW; the boy is a little nerdy, but definitely not gay.

The group decides that what Morgan needs is a girl. Sam is sure that he can design a better program than those dating services, so they set about finding the prefect woman for Morgan. After entering information on Morgan, they include information on all their female relatives of the right age. Everyone is surprised when the computer chooses Hannah’s niece Amelia.  After all, Morgan is a genius and Amelia, while beautiful, is a airhead. Could the computer have made a mistake? Not possible, states Sam.

Come join the fun.

New book, “Fight For Your Life!”

Coming soon!paperback&typewriter

I just finished my second book. “Fight For Your Life!” has been sent to my editor, who will then send it back for rewrites, so hopefully it will be in print in the next month or two or three. I finished the story of Steve and Leah that I started in the first novel and told the story of a much more mature Darrin, Great Grandpa Burke’s mine and Darrin’s first love. To add some drama Jefferson Randall has to make an appearance and try one more time to kill Leah. I have to stop there so I won’t give away anymore secrets! Stay tuned for book number two and a chance to get book one for free!

Thank you!

I love all of you who have taken the time to read my book! I have heard from so many of you how much you liked “Run For Your Life!” and you don’t know how much that means to a first time author. More than once I have heard how you didn’t want to put the book down and that was music to my ears. Thank you, again, stay tuned for the release of “Fight For Your Life!”  and as always happy reading, Linda

Pulpwood Queens Girlfriends Weekend

On Martin Luther King weekend each year there is a conference of book lovers and authors. Kathy Murphy started the Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guys Book Club and everyone meets for a three day weekend in Nacogdoches, Texas. With all the people involved having an interest in books, and add to that the Mardi gras atmosphere, it makes for a fun time. This is probably the only book club in existence where a tiara is mandatory.

Folklore author R.D. Vincent

We all got to meet author R.D.Vincent there. R.D. is a charming young man who grew up hearing stories of New England Folklore from his grandmother and aunt, and as a result he seems very close to both ladies. I thought about that as I was reading the first three novellas. In today’s world with video games, television and cell phones, we don’t take the time to connect with one another. There is a grandmother in these stories and she develops a close bond with her grandchildren by telling them these tales.

Book 1 – The Ring of Lazarus

The first story starts out with the grandmother trying to cook dinner and keep two rambunctious boys entertained.  In this novella, a young girl is sent to a nearby farm to get some herbs, and as her family is sick, medicine as well.. Her mother had passed down a beautiful silver ring that was reported to belong to a gypsy. This ring was to go to the oldest daughter and carried a bit of gypsy magic. On the way home a dark force causes the girls death. Can a silver ring bring her back to life?

Book 2 – The Witch of Tamarack Hill

Again, this section is a tale told by the grandmother to her two grandsons. This is a story of two

sisters who lose their mother at a very early age.The older sister is interested in the art of healing and she is attuned to things that no one else seems to sense. The younger sister is out playing by the lake when she disappears. The father and older sister are grief stricken and they hunt for weeks for the younger sister. Refusing to give up, they leave a light in the window each night.. They meet an old woman in the woods and the older sister begins to learn from her all the secrets of healing and magic. After the tragedy of losing several children in the village, the town decides they have to do something to rid themselves of the evil stalking their children, and in the end they defeat the witch and the children are returned.

Book 3 – The Miracles of the Midwife Sutton

The third story the grandmother teaches her grandsons about faith. In those days, midwives were also versed in the art of healing. The midwife was there when the town was cursed and she sees that the curse is coming to be. The town suffers a horrible drought, and Midwife Sutton sets about making plans to correct the things she can correct. She travels some four months to collect the things she must have to end the curse. Not only does this story teach her grandsons the meaning of faith, but also the need for patience.

Hope for the future

In these novellas, R.D.Vincent teaches us how to relate to the people around us by developing a closeness we don’t see as much of in today’s society. I look forward to one day having a hardbound copy of this authors complete works, like the stories of the Brothers Grimm. Excellent job, R.D.!

I hope you will pick up these charming stories for the young person in your life.

Happy reading, Linda
