It’s Coming, August 5th

Wearing the publishing hat!

After I finished my first book, someone told me about a contest sponsored by Harlequin.  I entered and was amazed at the sheer number of other entries, because basically, anything anyone submits in the English language qualifies.  Since this covers writers located in England, Canada, South Africa, Australia, etc. in addition to the USA, that makes for a lot of competition.  To enter I was supposed to submit a first chapter, so I went to a friend who taught college English and asked her tell me what she thought of the mine.  I was surprised at her critique;  she pointed out that while she liked it, she found herself wanting to correct the grammar in the dialog, then realized not everyone spoke proper grammar.  That gave me a lot to think about! To make a long story short, I didn’t place in the contest and eventually decided to publish on my own, which meant figuring out how. If you are an independent author you have to wear a lot of hats, and publisher is just one of them.

Finding the perfect partner, right on my own doorstep!

I come from a generation that doesn’t always co-exist with computers easily. With an actual publishing house, that wouldn’t have been an issue since I could have written the books and sent them in, end of involvement short of necessary revisions. As an indy author, this was a major problem.

When she was growing up, my daughter and I had the usual struggles and, although we have always shared a deep love, some days we didn’t like each other very well. In the end she turned out to be a strong woman, and since I consider myself to be strong as well, imagine my shock and eventual pleasure to find that she and I would become the perfect team in publishing my books. When writing, she acts as my editor. She has no problem marking a sentence, a paragraph or even a page in red and putting a note in the margin; “Mom, this doesn’t work,” or “You have already covered this subject on page number __.” Next, I decide on a book cover and she turns into the graphic designer who makes it work. Her final step is to clean up the manuscript, making sure all the chapters and paragraphs line up so that it can be uploaded to the printer. She also plays a essential part in making  the web page you are now reading work.  These are things I could never do by myself!

‘Run For Your Life!’ free in e-book format…

I didn’t think about writing a sequel to ‘Run For Your Life!’ but ideas just kept coming to me. For one thing, Steve and Leah kept wanting to finish their story and Jeff Randall was just too evil to fade away. Darrin, who appeared in the first book as the pampered and spoiled younger brother, grew up and also had a story to tell so, ‘Fight For Your Life!’ came to life. If you haven’t read “Run For Your Life!” then you could certainly read ‘Fight For Your Life!’ without buying the first book as it stands on it’s own.  I do think that anyone who likes the story line would enjoy reading it from the very beginning however.  While I can’t afford to send everyone a free book to make that easier, I will be dropping the price on the e-book version of ‘Run For Your Life!’ so that over the next few weeks you can download the electronic version for free.  ‘Fight For Your Life!’  will be released on August 5th at most, if not all of the major retailers. If you are a person who likes to have the actual book in your hands, then you can order the paperback version of ‘Fight For Your Life!’ as soon as it becomes available.

“Thank You!”

I want to thank all of you who have read ‘Run For Your Life!’ I love hearing your thoughts on the book and I especially like hearing that you are looking forward to ‘Fight For Your Life!’  I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Book Review of Hidden Summit by Robyn Carr

This author makes you feel you are part of Small Town, America!

Robyn Carr writes romantic adventures set amid small town life. One such town is Virgin River, a wide spot in the road in the mountains of Northern California. Just like her characters, Jack and his friend Preacher, I fell in love with Virgin River from the first book. These two characters started the series by setting up a bar and grill in town. Jack bought a run down building and turned it into a business and invited his friend Preacher to come cook for him. Next, the love of Jack’s life. Mel, comes to town and the romance begins. One by one, Miss Carr introduces us to the citizens of Virgin River and soon they become our friends.

This book gives you a look into the witness protection program.

Robyn Carr - Hidden Summit   Hidden Summit is one of the newest Virgin River novels. Connor Danson sees a man murdered in the alley behind his store in Sacramento California, and the District Attorney decides that Virgin River is the perfect place to hide his only witness. He has remained friends with Brie Valenzuela who was a colleague and now lives in the small town. Brie sets Connor up with a job and a place to live until he is needed to testify against the killer.

Connor is not sure that small town life is for him. He has spent his life working in his family’s Hardware Store and Virgin River feels very small and lonely.  Connor soon discovers that the citizens are friendly and they go out of their way to make him feel at home. Then, along comes Leslie, a woman who understands how life can sometime throw you a curve. When it comes time to testify and resume his life, Connor finds there is no place where he would rather be than Virgin River. The story has lots of twists and turns along the way. Don’t miss this thrilling Virgin River Book.

Review of New Book “The Obsession” by Nora Roberts

I love Nora Roberts!

This is an outstanding author. She writes so many different story lines, it is impossible to put her into a category. I fell in love with her latest book. If someone asked me to rate it on a scale of one to five, it would have to be at least an eight. Nora Roberts writes an outstanding mystery!

Nora Roberts - The ObsessionThe Obsession grabs your interest from the first page!

Naomi sees something no young girl should ever see. It is a hot night in rural America, in a time when a lot of people had never heard of air conditioning. The coming storm and the heat woke Naomi and she sees her father leaving the house in the wee hours of the night. Was he going to the creek for a swim? Naomi sneaks out to follow him, never suspecting she is walking into a nightmare. Thomas David Bowes kidnaps young girls to rape and torture and that night, Naomi saves a young woman’s life and sees her father for the monster he is.

Review of “The Wedding Trap” by Adrienne Bell

Something for us less than perfect people!

This book is fast paced and written for less than perfect people like me. Adrienne Bell captured the perfect heroine, a little overweight and insecure, with a mother she loves but doesn’t get along with. This is a fun read!

A fun read!

The Wedding Trap - Adrienne Bell  In “The Wedding Trap”, Beth Bradley is backed into a corner, or so she thinks. Her best friend is getting married and she is to be her Maid of Honor. Beth couldn’t be happier for Isobel, except her ex-boyfriend is the best man. Who wants to show up at the wedding without a date when their ex is involved? So, she brings out her make believe boy friend, Charlie. No one believes Charlie really exists, so she has to find a man to play Charlie and the trouble and fun begins.

Is he using her or is she using him?

She suspects he is a car thief, but oh what a car thief, with the perfect body wrapped in an expensive Italian suit. He is CIA, sent to investigate a mobster who just happens to be related to the bride. What better cover than to be the boyfriend of the Maid of Honor?

There is one mishap after another and you will laugh as you fall in love with Beth and Charlie (aka Alex). The nice thing is that Alex, in spite of Beth’s ability to stumble into trouble, has fallen madly in love with her.

A great love story with a little mystery thrown in! I highly recommend this book. Happy Reading, Linda

Let’s go to the movies!

Movie,”Me Before You” by Jojo Moyes

Me Before You” from the book by Jojo Moyes was a fantastic movie. This story gives you a lot to think about when a young man who has it all, suddenly finds himself paralyzed and confined to a wheel chair. The film deals with life as a quadriplegic, a love that develops against all odds and a mans who doesn’t want life, if he can’t live it on his own terms. “Do you believe you should have the right to end your life?”

Very sad and moving! I highly recommend, Me Before You.

Book Review of The Liar by Nora Roberts

  The author!

I can’t get enough of Nora Roberts books. With a lot of authors you can tell what type of book it will be, but not so with Nora Roberts. Miss Roberts writes a series set in Ireland and then turns around and gives you a series set in a charming Inn on the east coast of the United States. You simply can not put Miss Roberts in a category because she is in a category by herself. Then she completely sweeps you away to another era writing her futuristic series as J.D. Robb. There is no one else like her.

The Liar - Nora RobertsThe book!

The Liar is aptly named. Shelby Foxworth lost her husband in a tragic accident. She finds herself left alone with her three year old daughter. The first shock is finding out her wealthy husband is in debt and nothing is as it seems. Shelby is so ashamed to have been deceived, why did she not see what was in front of her eyes? She puts her already mortgaged house on the market and sets about trying to clear some of the debt. The fur coat that he bought her and she has never worn goes back, and all the fancy clothing she acquired to support the lifestyle they led goes to a high end consignment shop. Her diamond wedding rings, which were insured for thousands of dollars, turn out to be worth next to nothing. She sells the furniture, it was ugly anyway, and takes her daughter home to Tennessee, but the shocks keep coming. Her husband wasn’t Richard Foxworth and they weren’t really married. Follow Shelby as she tries to clear a debt she doesn’t actually owe, try to make a life for herself and her little girl and find deep inside herself the strong woman she once was. A truly fascinating book of home, love, family and second chances.

Lily is one of the lucky ones, her injury is low enough to allow her to live a normal life. A little higher and her breathing could have been effected. Scattered by Joan Johnston

Joan Johnston - ShatteredJoan Johnston writes novels with a western theme. I went to a used book sale and found one of her older books that I hadn’t read; “Shattered“, one of the her Bitter Creek novels. I had forgotten what a truly gifted storyteller this lady is.

Nine years ago Kate Grayhawk Pendleton walked into a hotel room she shared with her husband to find him in bed with another woman. Kate walks out of the room and into the bar downstairs, where she picks out a stranger and asks him to go upstairs with her. He checks them into the penthouse suite and a few weeks later she learns she is pregnant.

Fast forward nine years and she has buried her husband with military honers and become involved with a Texas Ranger, but all is not what it seems. She had been shot a few months before and while she is unconscious one of her twin sons had an accident, requiring a blood transfusion. Her mother-in-law, who is a prominent politician, has found out the twins are not her son’s biological children, but that doesn’t concern her as much as what the news, should it come out, will do to her political future.

As if Kate doesn’t have enough to deal with, her husband comes back from the dead and the biological father turns out to be a mob boss’ illegitimate son. Now I admit when you write this all out it sound a little hokey, but Kate and Wyatt Shaw have found the kind of chemistry that happens once in a lifetime. It also turns out Shaw is one of the good guys who has had a hard time living down the circumstances of his birth. While he is angry with Kate for keeping his sons from him, he is so pleased to be a father that he can’t hold on to his anger. He also finds out he is still as attracted to Kate as he was on that long ago night. Kate on the other hand is fighting her attraction to Shaw. She keeps telling herself that she is in love with the Texas Ranger, but she just can’t seem to make herself believe it.

This is really a fun read with plenty of mystery to keep you turning the pages.
