I Think I Can Write!

I had an idea for a book and after finishing my manuscript, I started looking for a publisher. I found several publishers that were willing to publish my book, all I had to do was give them a fee. I believed in myself, but what do I know? One thing I did know was that I wasn’t going to allow someone to publish my book that did not believe in me. If they believed in my work, they would do the book without a fee. I ended up publishing my first two books independently through Amazon and am proud of them. For someone that has no experience they turned out to be quite good, but I had a lot to learn.

When my grandson was young, I had an idea for children’s book, as you are sometimes inclined to do. I let life take precedence and it was after retirement when I finished that book. I read the story to a writer’s group that I belong to and they encouraged me to show the manuscript to a small but growing publisher in Northwest Arkansas. I finally found someone who believed in me but they were interested in a series and wanted a total of five books, scary stuff for a budding author. Upon considering the project, I decided that maybe it wouldn’t be so hard however.

The first story was about a squirrel and his Blue Jay friend. What kind of life lessons do you teach your children growing up?  “Eric Finds a Friend”  is about friendship and how the “Wise Old Owl” series began. Next came a book on bullying, something a lot of children face. Not long after submitting all five manuscripts I had a contract with Oghma Creative Media. The process of publishing takes a while and it’s hard to be patient. Eric won’t be introduced until October of 2020 and I can hardly wait to hold that first book in my hands.

I am now in the process of doing rewrites on the manuscript for my first romantic suspense, “Run For Your Life!”  The one thing that I didn’t like about the book, was that when it appeared in print, it seemed a little small. I have decided that I am a better writer now and there are some things that I would like to expand upon. I hope that when I submit the revised manuscript, Oghma will decide to offer me a contract for my romantic suspense.  With their encouragement, I know I can be a better author!

Don’t give up! Dreams do come true!

Out In Left Field

Well it is hard to get any further out in left field than I did last month. As an Indy published author, I have always dreamed of finding a publisher.  Remember that old saying, “be careful what you wish for”?  In the fall of 2018 I signed a contract with a publisher in Northwest Arkansas and have turned in the five manuscripts for a series of children’s books to be titled “The Wise Old Owl Series.”  The company put me in touch with a fantastic lady and together we edited the five manuscripts, but now comes the hard part!  I have never been blessed with a lot of patience and  waiting for an illustrator has been one of the hardest things you can imagine.  My daughter, who is the head of my cheering section, says use this time to write! Sound advice but all I can think of is how is Eric, the star of my first book “Eric Finds A Friend” going to look? Is he going to resemble the squirrel who plays in my back yard? Is the illustrator going to recognize my bluebird,  Nic Nic, as the grouchy little trouble maker with a heart of gold that I see?  Are they going to come to life like Bambi and Thumper of Walt Disney fame?  It does no good to tell myself to be patient and it is hard to write about “Spanish Gold ” when squirrels and bluebirds are racing around in my head. Part of being a writer means we can be dramatic, so stay tuned for the trials and tribulations of Linda and look for Eric and Nic Nic coming soon!

Happy New Year!

A dear friend just finished my second book, “Fight For Your Life!” He is wondering if I plan to write a third in the series. To be honest i did plan to finish out the story line with a final book but I planed to throw in a completely unrelated book set near my childhood home in Oklahoma first. I have been working on both books and I don’t know which will start talking to me first, because for me the story starts coming to me almost like a storyteller telling me a interesting tale.  We will see where my imagination takes me. Have a wonderful New Year.

A Column of My Own!

I have noticed that with self-publishing it’s easier than ever to get a book published. There are several sites who will work with you to print the book, as well as setup and sell your work in the e-book format, but the author is expected to do their own marketing. Needless to say, it’s harder to get it in front of the public. In my section of Arkansas and Oklahoma there are a growing number of self-published authors, of which I am one.  Seeing a need for local representation, I recently contacted the editor of the regional newspaper to propose a column featuring our area’s authors and was excited as well as a bit shocked when he approved my idea. Beginning the 18th of July, I will be doing  a twice monthly column entitled “The Book Nook” for the Times Record. I want to introduce you to some outstanding, independent authors and in turn, I will get to meet writers of all ages and learn what they enjoy writing about. I hope this will create an interest in all kinds of books, so grab a copy of the Times Record or visit them online and let me acquaint you with our area authors.  My column will appear on the first and third Tuesday of each month if you would like to check it out!

Also, be sure to look for my newest book, “Fight For Your Life!” coming soon!

How to Make a Chocolate Lover Happy

With all the last minute prep on the book, I haven’t had a lot of time to write on my blog. Instead, I thought I would share a favorite recipe with you. My mother-in-law was the sweetest person and a great cook, so I’m gifting you with the directions for her go to Chocolate Cookie Sheet Cake.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease an 11 X 16 X 1 inch cookie sheet pan.  Shift into a bowl… 2 cups of flour, 2 cups of sugar, 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Stir to mix.

Bring to a boil and pour over dry mixture… 2 sticks of butter, 6 tablespoons of cocoa, and 1 cup of water.

Add…1/2 cup of buttermilk, 2 beaten eggs and 1 teaspoon of vanilla to mixture. Beat well, pour into cookie sheet pan and bake for 20 minutes.

Five minutes before the cake is done bring to a boil… 1 stick of butter, 4 tablespoons of milk or cream. Pour over one box of powdered sugar to which you have added 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Beat well and pour over cake while hot. If you like nuts add a cup of chopped pecans to the icing.

This is a great, moist cake, so curl up with a piece and a good book. Just don’t get crumbs between the pages!

Spring is Wonderful, Except for the Bugs!

There is nothing like spring; the sun shining on the new green leaves, the flowers poking their head through the dirt, it somehow makes the world look fresher and brighter. I opened the patio doors and walked outside to enjoy the day, but as I turned to go inside something darted in ahead of me: the first fly of the year. This guy was large and the fact that he had been hibernating recently didn’t seem to be slowing him down one bit. When I said he was big, I mean he was huge, like the size of a WWII bomber. I grabbed the spray and chased him around the house, wondering which of us was going to have a heart attack first.  Finally, he darted into the bathroom and I slammed the door on him before heading to the laundry room where the fly-swat was hanging in a small broom  closet.

Let me pause here to say that as a child, I discovered I was horrible at sports. You see, I have a problem with depth perception. My brothers were eight and ten years older than I so mother would not let them beat me up, but my older brother wisely devised a way of getting even when I irritated him. He would offer to play catch and since I couldn’t catch the ball, he could hurl it at me and be certain to hit me with it. Then, he would tell Mother that he was just trying to play ball with me. It wasn’t his fault that I got hit, but back to the fly.

At first I couldn’t find him and I got to wondering if he had somehow gotten out as I slammed the door. I looked in the shower, but still no fly.  Then I spotted him on the wall just under the light fixture.  Now if he had been flying I probably would have chased him another fifteen minutes, but there he was, trying to get warm. All in all, it wasn’t even a fair fight.

The world is certainly a beautiful place if you just stop and look.  New life at every turn and the water running in all the streams. There is nothing more breathtaking than an unexpected waterfall or a quiet, shady glade. There is just one fly in the ointment,   B U G S!

Find a quite spot and curl up with a good book, and maybe some bug spray if you decide to do it outside!

What the authors we read tells us about ourselves!

I have always felt that if you live on this earth long enough and keep an open mind, you will learn a lot about yourself and the world around you. Then, God sent me E. ( Now if you don’t believe in God, this is the first and the last time I will mention him so you are free to continue reading.) E. came into my life from another state and she has  me examining my thoughts and  values. She teases me about liking feel-good books! This I am guilty of; one of my favorite authors is Debbie Macomber and we all know from the Hallmark Channel how many of her books have been made into feel good movies.

It was at this point that I got to feeling a little defensive. I am not overly educated, with part of my learning coming from college and part from the school of hard knocks, so maybe I’m being a little sensitive. I  started  thinking however,  what do the books we read tell us about ourselves? I like feel-good books, comedies, and a good mystery. I definitely prefer fiction to an autobiography and I’m not particularly fond of history,  unless it’s wrapped around a good story line. Maybe growing up not feeling a lot of love affected my psyche and therefore, I love a feel good book with a lot of love and people not afraid to show it.  I have an insatiable curiosity and can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next, so I guess that accounts for the mystery! I love life,  excitement and people so I’m just too busy living my life to read about others, so that accounts for my dislike of autobiographies.  Maybe you CAN tell a lot about yourself from the books you read after all.

You see, I have it in my mind that authors pretty much follow a formula. If they are successful and a genre works for them, they continue to write along the same line. Their story telling improves with experience but the genre remains the same.  I am sure that each of you could probably point out an exception to that rule, but that’s something for another time. All I know is, reading within my favorite genres is a habit that I can’t break  and I really have no desire to try. There is nothing like a good book to take your mind off your troubles,  You can travel around the world and meet the most fascinating people, while never leaving home.  I never laughed as much as when I read Janet Chapman’s “From a Kiss to a Queen”.  When I feel the need for a good mystery, then Linda Howard and Catherine Coulter come to mind. There are so many great authors out there, and I am striving to add my name to the list.

Go out and find a good book!

Author – What’s in a name?

Those of us who love to read have probably belonged to a book club. I have spent many an hour involved in a discussion of a most loved, maybe just liked, or couldn’t stand book. At one point I asked myself the question, “Do I want to continue to do this?” That question came after two or three of the “I can’t stand” books.

the-thinkerI have come up with a new concept, study the author rather than the book. I started one book club with this thought in mind and it has been a lot of fun. My club has decided that a lot of authors write fantastic books that only get better as the author hones their skills. We have also decided that some of our favorite authors seem to be running out of ideas! When you read different stories by the same author it gives you a whole different outlook on their writing.

Sherryl Woods is an author I like to read. Her story line is woven around small town life. I grew up in a small town in Oklahoma, but my town was not as interesting as Miss Woods’ towns. In her Chesapeake Shores books you feel like you get to know the whole town. The stories are all different but the small town feel is there. I would have loved to have a grandfather like Mick O’Brien, except when he was interfering in my love life.

Robyn Carr is another one of those authors who introduce you to small town life. I searched my map trying to figure out the town in northern California she patterned the Virgin River Series after. I feel as if I know the whole town from her books and would move there in a minute if I could only find the town. Does that tell you I get too involved in the story line?  I love to read, it is like a disease that I hope no one finds a cure for.

My favorite author of all time is Nora Roberts. She writes such varied story lines that you are sure to find something you like. One time it is a mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat and the next one weaves the folk stories of Ireland into the story line. That doesn’t count her stories penned as J.D. Robb where she writes a futuristic detective story.  Roarke and Dallas are my favorite couple.

I am going to visit a lady after Thanksgiving who wants me to organize a book club for her book store. How much fun will that be? So if you like the idea of a club that studies the author instead of the book, I may have a club for you. I will give you all the information as soon as we work out the details.

   As always,

   Happy reading, Linda

Meet and Greet for Writers

Attention writers and aspiring writers:

True Lit Fayetteville Literary Festival Mark your calendars for next year! I had a great time on Saturday while attending the True Lit Festival at the Fayetteville Public Library. I think this was their 4th year and it was fantastic. Not only were there writing workshops, but you got to meet and speak with magazine and book publishers. They had a panel where the monitor asked a lot of general questions and then toward the end they took them from the floor. As an author that has only self published so far, I was able to learn a lot about how to submit my work to and what to expect from a publisher.  The most thrilling part for me was that I got ten minutes to pitch my project to the publishers of my choice.

I have a dream and that is to write books that someone, somewhere will read and enjoy. I have had limited success as a self-published author, but to go into a local bookstore and see my books on the shelf would be the dream of a lifetime.

A very nice lady from one of the publishing houses now has a copy of my first book and the first three chapters of the next one. Wish me luck and if it’s your dream to write, don’t give up. I hope to see you next year in Fayetteville, Arkansas at the True Lit Festival.

Review of “An Unlikely Match” by Barbara Dunlop

Fun on BookBub

I have found a new site. When I am not writing, I have been reading books from BookBub. This site has introduced me to authors I have never read before and I am having a lot of fun. If you are a book junkie like me, they will help satisfy your addiction for books. Calling all readers to come join me!

One author I am reading

Barbara Dunlop,  a Canadian author, starts the book with four matchmaking retirees. They have condos in Sunny Autumn Seniors Community in Florida. This foursome decides to find a woman for JW’s grandson, and you won’t believe the results.

An adventure in matchmaking

Barbara Dunlop - An Unlikely MatchIn An Unlikely Match, we are introduced to four retirees. JW Sterling never knew he had a child, much less a grandchild. He retired from the service and as a former Green Beret, he was totally unprepared for a grown grandson. It started with Dolly saying that Morgan was gay. That was ridiculous, Sterling men were not gay. Hannah insisted that just because he is a little awkward, it didn’t mean he is gay. Sam, a retired scientist and computer genius, agrees with JW; the boy is a little nerdy, but definitely not gay.

The group decides that what Morgan needs is a girl. Sam is sure that he can design a better program than those dating services, so they set about finding the prefect woman for Morgan. After entering information on Morgan, they include information on all their female relatives of the right age. Everyone is surprised when the computer chooses Hannah’s niece Amelia.  After all, Morgan is a genius and Amelia, while beautiful, is a airhead. Could the computer have made a mistake? Not possible, states Sam.

Come join the fun.
